On Friday, 80 business, nonprofit, and community leaders gathered at Greenwood Presbyterian Church's gymnasium to participate in a Poverty Simulation Experience. Participants were given an identity far from their own and placed into families that encountered the day-to-day realities of life in poverty. With shortages of money and an abundance of stress, the simulation took participants though a "month in the life." Roles varied from single parents caring for their children to senior citizens trying to maintain their self-sufficiency on Social Security. Each family’s task was to provide food, shelter, and other basic necessities while navigating complex systems low-income families interact with daily.
