The Arts Council of Greenwood County

The Arts Council of Greenwood County, established in 1993, takes a leadership role in community cultural planning and development. In this role the Arts Council offers support to existing organizations, provides programming opportunities to the community, and provides impetus for future arts and cultural development in Greenwood County. The council is governed by a Board of Directors elected from the community and is the local link to the SC Arts Commission. The Arts Council work in four realms in this community: advocacy, grants, and programs
which include arts education initiatives.

In its advocacy role, the Council represents the total picture of cultural development for our citizens. Through speaking engagements, the Executive Director raises awareness of our arts and cultural organizations as well as initiatives in the schools and in the private sector. A power point presentation entitled “Bringing the Arts to Life” showcases the many opportunities available in the county. Additionally the Council has become the clearinghouse for its thirteen member organizations by convening meetings of this group, coordinating schedules, and discussing issues of mutual interest.

The Council is aware of unmet needs in the community and responds to those in its programming role. Assuming this responsibility led the Council to organize some adult and children’s programming. The adults may enjoy trips or the exhibits at the gallery or the annual concert. For children, there are art camps in the summer, programs during the school year, artist residencies in schools, and student exhibits in the gallery.

Under the granting role, the Arts Council works from two angles. First the Council makes grant requests to the SC Arts Commission. Grants received generally include annual support, salary support, subgranting, facilities planning, and artist residency. The Arts Council was designated as a subgrant site by the SC Arts Commission and now grants funds to local arts and cultural
organizations as well.

The most compelling work of the Arts Council involved the development of the Center for the Arts. The Council took a leadership role in planning and funding and formulated a plan for a cultural center in uptown Greenwood. The historic Federal Building became the centerpiece of the complex. Renovated as a state of the art gallery and reception space, the Federal Building also houses offices for the Arts Council of Greenwood County, the Executive Director of the Self Family Foundation, and the Greenwood Visitors and Tourism Board.
