Workforce Development and Existing Industry
The Greenwood Partnership Alliance and the Greenwood Area Chamber of Commerce partner to improve workforce development. The Workforce Development and Existing Industry Office is fully funded by the Greenwood Partnership Alliance, which is the economic development entity forGreenwood County. The Partnership Alliance is the only economic development entity in the state that offers this service to both prospective and existing employers. The role of workforce development is to build on existing training and education resources. The overall goal is to provide the skilled workforce necessary in order to attract and retain employers. We believe this program will enhance the prosperity of the county and its citizens. Partners include such entities as Lander University, Piedmont Technical College, the K-12 school system, the Employment Security Commission, the Upper Savannah Council of Governments and its Workforce Investment Partners, the Western Piedmont Education Consortium, the Regional EducationCenter, the Literacy Council and the South Carolina Department of Commerce Workforce Development Division.
Current initiatives include a work ethic certification program targeted to high school juniors and seniors, a web portal for internships and apprenticeships for K-16 students, a skills assessment and training program for all levels of the workforce, and a leadership development program for rising stars in industry. As well, specialized programs such as a pre-employment training curriculum for machining employers has been developed to address targeted employer needs.
The Director of Workforce Development and Existing Industry Office is a fulltime member of the Chamber of Commerce CEO Roundtable and Human Resource Roundtable. The Greenwood Partnership Initiative is the workforce steering committee for the Chamber of Commerce. The GPI has as a mission to further the workforce development activities for the county and to develop activities that support the Education and Economic Development Act through existing and new programs.
